Ceiling Types
Kitchen Ceiling Water Damage

Short answer
Water stains on a kitchen ceiling usually come from what is above it: a second-floor bathroom, laundry room or roof. Kitchens also have recessed lights that act as drain points for water above, and range hoods that, if ducted poorly, can drip condensation. Find the room above the stain first, then test its fixtures.
At a glance
- Condition
- Kitchen ceiling damaged by water from above or from kitchen equipment.
- Common causes
- Bathrooms and laundry rooms above, roof leaks, range hood duct condensation.
- Evidence
- Stains around recessed lights, under the room above, or near the hood duct.
- Risk if ignored
- Water at recessed light housings is an electrical hazard.
- What to do now
- Identify the room above; cut power to wet lights from a dry panel location.
- Solution
- Repair the source; electrician check of wet light housings; dry and repair the ceiling.
What is above your kitchen?
| Above the kitchen | Check |
|---|---|
| Bathroom | Upstairs bathroom leak fixture tests |
| Laundry room | Washer hoses and drain: appliance leaks |
| Attic and roof | Roof leak and range hood duct |
| Bedroom or hallway | Supply lines running through the floor: plumbing leak |
Recessed lights and water
Recessed light housings are holes in the ceiling, so water traveling across the top of the drywall often drains out through them. Water inside a light housing is an electrical hazard. Switch off the circuit at the panel from a dry location, do not remove trims or bulbs while wet, and have an electrician inspect the housings before power is restored.
Cooking moisture and grease
Large amounts of steam from cooking can condense on cold ceilings in winter, and a range hood duct running through a cold attic can condense moisture that drips back. Grease films also cause discoloration that is easy to mistake for water stains; grease stains are usually spread around the cooktop area and wipe off with a degreaser. Water stains have rings and do not wipe off.
Frequently asked questions
Why is water coming out of my kitchen recessed light?
Water from a leak above is traveling across the top of the drywall and draining out through the light housing, which is an opening in the ceiling. Turn off that circuit at the breaker and have an electrician check it.
Can a range hood cause ceiling water damage?
Yes. A hood duct through a cold attic can condense moisture that drips back, and a poorly sealed roof or wall cap can let rain in.
Is that brown stain on my kitchen ceiling grease or water?
Grease discoloration is usually spread above the cooking area and wipes off with degreaser. A water stain has rings, is localized, and does not wipe off.
