Water Damage Ceiling

Causes

Bathtub Leaking Through the Ceiling Below

Last reviewed

Short answer

A bathtub usually leaks into the ceiling below through its overflow gasket (when the tub is filled high), its drain connection (when water drains), the spout or wall above it, or water splashing over the edge onto the floor. The fill-level test tells these apart. Many tub drain and overflow repairs can be done through an access panel or the ceiling below without removing the tub.

At a glance

Condition
Water escaping at the tub's drain, overflow or surrounding seals.
Common causes
Dried-out overflow gasket, loose drain shoe, failed plumber's putty, cracked tub, failed caulk, splash.
Evidence
Stain below the tub end with the drain; stain growth after baths but not showers.
Risk if ignored
Repeated soaking of the subfloor and ceiling; mold and rot over time.
What to do now
Use the shower instead of filling the tub, and run the fill-level test.
Solution
Plumber replaces gaskets or the drain and overflow assembly; caulk is renewed; ceiling dried and patched.

Repairs

If the ceiling below has to be opened, plan the opening so it serves both the plumber's access and the ceiling drying, and so the patch lands on framing. See plumbing leak for the access-opening approach and drywall ceiling repair for the patch.

  • Overflow gasket: inexpensive part; replaced by removing the overflow cover, and sometimes requires access from behind.
  • Drain: the drain flange is resealed or the drain shoe and waste-and-overflow assembly replaced, typically from an access panel or the ceiling below.
  • Caulk: old caulk is removed fully, the joint dried, and new silicone or tub-and-tile caulk applied.
  • Spout and valve: plumbing repair, sometimes with a small wall access opening.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my ceiling leak only when I take a bath?

A leak only when the tub is filled high usually points to the overflow gasket. A leak when it drains points to the drain connection.

Can a bathtub drain be fixed from the ceiling below?

Often, yes. The drain shoe and waste-and-overflow assembly are under the tub, so many plumbers repair them through an access panel or an opening in the ceiling below.

Does failed caulk around a tub cause ceiling leaks?

It can. Water from showers or splashing can get behind failed caulk at the tub-to-wall or tub-to-floor joint and run into the floor below.
